Board of Selectmen should honor the will of the people

To the Editor:

This letter is a strong condemnation of the recent Board of Selectmen vote that declared last month’s petition for a special election for the Board’s vacancy null and void.

The signature hallmark of our democracy is our ability to choose our leaders. In the 2015 Board of Selectmen election, the people of Fairfield chose Michael Tetreau, Chris Tymniak, and Laurie McCardle. Upon Mrs. McCardle’s resignation last year, I joined a group of over 3,200 concerned Fairfield citizens who believe that we should respect that hallmark of our democracy and have the right to choose our own leaders.

The 2-1 Board of Selectmen vote on Wednesday night was a strictly partisan vote by Mr. Tymniak and Mr. Ed Bateson who are simply ignoring the will of the Fairfield people. Upon the resignation of Mrs. McCardle, the Republicans were well within their right to appoint a successor, however upon collecting signatures that amounted to 5% of the electorate, we were well within our right to force a special election to choose our own leader.

I, as a concerned citizen of the Town of Fairfield, am calling upon the Board of Selectmen to reconsider this decision as it violates the will of the people. My request is not one that comes from a place of partisanship, but rather a place of concern. The petition that was circulated and signed last month by myself and my fellow citizens was a display of grassroots democracy at its finest. It was a group of people that sought to have their leaders chosen by election rather than appointment.

This is not a radical plea, nor is it a “illegal power grab” as RTC Chairman Michael Herley falsely accuses. This is simply the desire of our townspeople to be heard and there is no harm in holding a special election to ensure that our local government represents the will of the people.
