LETTER: Fed up with politicians who place politics above people

To the Editor:

Fairfield residents are fed up with politicians who place politics above people. The people of Fairfield demanded a special election so that we can choose who finishes the remaining 3 years on the Board of Selectmen.

Mr. Bateson and Mr. Tymniak, the two Republicans on the Board of Selectman, chose to reject the will of the people, ignore the law, abuse their power, and violate ethics rules.

Mr. Bateson and Mr. Tymniak should be ashamed for taking action that was so highly partisan. It appears they care nothing for the town and only care about holding on to their power.

Their actions threaten to undermine democracy. Fairfield residents must stand up to this abuse of power and demand that the special election take place as scheduled by the Republican town Clerk on June 6, 2017.

Selectman Bateson voted to save his job while committing an ethics violation and undermining the integrity of the office he has been appointed to serve.

An election threatens Bateson’s job and compensation of approximately $12,000.

It’s  no surprise Bateson joined Selectman Tymniak in voting to quash the election scheduled for June 6th. This action is a violation of the Fairfield Charter which states clearly:

“No elected or appointed Town officer . . . shall . . . Engage in any business transaction or activity or have a financial interest, direct or indirect, which is incompatible with the proper discharge of the official duties or which may tend to impair the independence of judgment in the performance of the Town officer’s, employee’s, or member’s official duties.”

Mr. Bateson’s failure to recuse himself from this vote, where he so clearly had a conflict of interest, was an ethics violation and he should resign.

The people of Fairfield can not trust someone who allows their own personal interests to trump the will of the people and the best interests of our wonderful town.
