Fairfield Board of Selectmen vote to suppress election was undemocratic

Letter-to-the-EditorNEWTo the Editor:

I am writing to express my concern about the lack of ethics, judgement and respect for our democracy recently demonstrated by two of Fairfield’s Board of Selectmen, Mr. Bateson and Mr. Tymniak.

At the end of 2016, over 3,200 signatures were collected in Fairfield in order to force a special election for the vacated Board of Selectmen (BOS) seat which has 3 years remaining. I signed the petition because I believe that people of Fairfield should be able to choose who represents us. I believe the process of having a party put in a replacement is practical and efficient and would generally be acceptable for short periods of time. For me, the fact that 3 years remain in the term and a state statute allows for a process of calling for an election were compelling reasons to sign the petition.

Unfortunately, the two Republicans on the BOS voted on Wed night to stop the election. I was shocked that the two selectmen would act to disregard the will of the people in Fairfield. There is no reasonable justification for this, and it seems to me a clear case of acting for their own self interest.  At the very least, as the recent appointee, I would have expected Mr. Bateson to recuse himself from the decision. For me, now more than ever is a time to remain vigilant and fight openly to safeguard the ideals of democracy which form the cornerstone of this great country.

I am writing to publicly urge Mr. Bateson and Mr. Tymniak to reconsider their disgraceful and undemocratic decision.
