Fire destroys tractor trailer, load of paper on I-95

A firefighter was overcome by heat and a tractor trailer and the paper it was hauling destroyed in an early morning fire on I-95 Thursday, Aug. 2.

The Fairfield Fire Department was dispatched to I-95 North near Exit 23 at 3:05 a.m. Units found the trailer fully involved, according to Asst. Chief Scott Bisson.

The driver of the truck told firefighters he observed sparks coming from rear of his vehicle, and when he pulled over observed the rear tire burning. The driver tried to extinguish the fire with extinguishers but was unsuccessful. The fire quickly extended to the cargo compartment of the trailer and ignited the rolled paper products that the trailer was filled with.

Additional fire units were called to the scene to control the fire, and a pay loader from the state and towing companies were called to the scene to remove the contents of the truck so the fire could be extinguished. Units from Bridgeport Fire Department were called into cover for Fairfield units working at the scene during the fire.

One firefighter was transported from the scene to the hospital for an evaluation of heat related stress during the fire. He was discharged from St. Vincent’s Hospital as of the time of this release.

The driver of the truck was uninjured.

The truck and trailer are owned by Werner Enterprises in Omaha Nebraska. The truck originated in Allentown, Pa., and did not report any problems prior to the fire.

The trailer and contents were lost due to fire damage however and an estimated dollar loss is not available.
