Flirting with French author visits Pequot Library

Meet the author, William Alexander on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 4-6 p.m., in a 30-40 minute author talk, followed by Q & A, book sales, signing, and refreshments at Pequot Library.

Come hear this best-selling memoirist. Do you yearn to stroll down Les Champs-Elysees and window shop? Spend long afternoons in the Louvre gazing at priceless artwork? And crack open a bottle of champagne and a box of macrons to end your day? If so, this is the perfect pick for Francophiles! In his latest work, Flirting with French, Alexander divulges a not-so-secret desire: he wants to learn the language of love. This proves to be more harrowing than he thought and he shares with readers the difficulty of learning a second language in middle-age. He presents rich anecdotes about his experience, including a disastrous bike ride in the French countryside where he finds himself lost. He also provides a historical perspective of the preservation of the French language and firm evidence as to why it is harder for an adult to learn a second language than it is for children.

Alexander, a regular contributor to the New York Times op-ed pages, has also penned two other books, The $64 Tomato and 52 Loaves: A Half-Baked Adventure. He shares his trials, tribulations, and triumphs in gardening and baking. Alexander works as the director of technology at a psychiatric research facility claiming to be a “reasearcher, not a researchee.” He lives in the Hudson Valley, New York with his wife.

This event is part of Pequot Library’s Meet the Author series. The next Meet the Author event will take place on Sunday, November 27, from 4-6, featuring Sara Moulton. She will be sharing her latest, Sara Moulton’s Home Cooking 101. It is free and open to the public.
