Fairfield to celebrate ‘Pie Night’ at Ogden House Nov. 18

On Friday, Nov. 18, guests may tour the historic Ogden House by candlelight and sample pies the way Fairfielders did back in the 1800s when the Fairfield Museum holds a vintage “Pie Night” from 6 to 8 p.m.

pienight1Two hundred years ago, Fairfield had its own special way of celebrating Thanksgiving. One night around the holiday was designated as Pie Night, a social event when people walked from house to house on the Old Post Road and Mill Plain Green. The festivities started after dinner, and the order of the march varied from year to year. As the revelers moved on, the crowd grew larger as the hosts and hostesses at each house joined the roving party. Throughout the evening the participants sampled anywhere from 15 to 20 different varieties of pies.

By evening’s end, people would be found sitting in hallways, on stairs and all over the place in the final homes.

The background of this quaint custom is obscure, but the Burr family is generally credited with starting the Pie Night tradition around 1800. There was no prize for the one who consumed the most pie.

This year, families celebrate this Burr family tradition with candlelight tours of the Ogden House, a saltbox home from 1750 located at 1520 Bronson Road.

pienight-2“We are excited to revive the tradition of Pie Night in a beautiful historic home,” said Christine Jewell, director of education and programs at the Fairfield Museum. “We hope many locals will join us for a delightful and delicious evening!”

A suggested donation of $5 ($3 for seniors and students) will be collected at the door.
