Prep booters gain final

Davie Bruton and Stephen Tortora fired in second-half goals to propel Fairfield Prep to a 2-1 victory over Xavier in an SCC boys soccer semifinal on Saturday morning at Alumni Field.
Bruton, Prep’s senior midfield ace, snapped a scoreless tie in the 55th minute, collecting a rebound of freshman Djimon’s Johnson’s shot and volleying a low drive past Falcon keeper Zach Camner.
In the 72nd minute, Tortora netted on a terrific individual effort, fighting off a tackle attempt and slamming an off-balance shot into the corner of the net from inside the 18-yard box.
Prep (14-2-1), the top seed in the SCC, will face either second-seeded Amity or No. 3 Branford in the final on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at West Haven High’s Strong Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
The fifth-seeded Falcons (11-5-2) pulled back a late goal on Adam Boyington’s tap-in past Prep keeper Will Steiner in the 78th minute, but it was too little, too late for Xavier.
“The key was to be patient,” Jesuit coach Ryan Lyddy said. “That was the best advice the coaching staff could give.”
