Football: Ludlowe falls to Ridgefield

The Ridgefield High football team defeated Fairfield Ludlowe, 49-13, on a balmy Friday night at Tiger Hollow.

With senior quarterback Drew Fowler (shoulder) sidelined, junior understudy Greg Gatto made his first varsity start and threw four touchdown passes.

Ridgefield (2-1) set the tone early when it forced a quick three-and-out on Ludlowe’s game-opening series. On the Tigers’ first play from scrimmage, Gatto hit wideout Chris Longo on a screen pass that turned into a 39-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

The points kept coming for the hosts. Petros Papadopoulos scored on a 22-yard run, and Gatto connected with Collin Lowe for a 10-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A 27-yard touchdown pass from Gatto to Lowe stretched Ridgefield’s advantage to 28-0 with 6:17 remaining in the first half.

The score stayed that way until Gatto and Lowe connected yet again, this time for a 50-yard touchdown, with seven minutes left in the third quarter. Papadopoulos added the fifth of his seven extra points for a 35-0 Ridgefield lead.

Fairfield Ludlowe defensive back Brian Howell returned a Gatto interception 87 yards for a touchdown later in the period.

Aidan Spearman returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and a 42-7 lead.

Ludlowe running back Javion Beasley scored with 14 seconds left in the third quarter to cap the scoring for the Falcons.

After a Ridgefield punt, Falcons quarterback Josh Evans was intercepted by senior captain Tommy MacMannis, who returned the pick 20 yards for a touchdown, Papadopoulos’s extra point made it 49-13 and ended the scoring with 8:33 left in the game.
