Sen. Hwang to testify Sep. 14 against fare hikes

Sen. Tony Hwang today announced he will attend the state Department of Transportation’s Sep. 14 public hearing on proposed rail fare hikes and speak strongly against any increase in fares.

The Wednesday hearing will be held at the UConn Stamford Campus Auditorium from 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Written comments on the proposed fare hikes must be received by Sept. 15 at [email protected]

Sen. Hwang said he also plans on signing the anti-fare hike petition created by fellow Fairfield House colleagues Laura Devlin (134th), Brenda Kupchick (132nd) and Republican state lawmakers.

The petition can be found at www.nofareincrease.com.

“The state is seeking to raise Metro-North and Shore Line East ticket prices by 5 percent on Dec. 1,”Sen. Hwang said.  “Please join me in speaking out against this hike and spread the word to commuters about the petition.  Let’s send a message to state transportation officials.  That message is: ‘No Fare Increase’.  Equally important, we need to increase the quality of service along with the safety and reliability of our rail transit infrastructure.”
