Electoral College system gives Connecticut advantage

To the Editor:

As a small population state in our democratic republic, Connecticut gets to cast more electoral votes per eligible voter in the Presidential race than most any other state in the nation. Like every state in the nation, Connecticut gets one electoral vote for every representative and senator in Congress. I am not sure why anyone from Connecticut would want to give up our advantage in the Electoral College.

You can do the comparative math on your own.

And consider that in the last 200 years more than 700 proposals have been introduced in Congress to reform or eliminate the Electoral College. There have been more proposals for Constitutional amendments on changing the Electoral College than on any other subject but I do not see a change coming anytime soon by the Congress.

Certainly, voters in Connecticut can feel disenfranchised with Connecticut’s winner take all rule our electoral college members must use to cast their votes. That is a rule our very own Connecticut government has established much like used by 48 other states and the District of Columbia. I would suggest that those who would have liked to see their choice for president better represented, when the Connecticut delegation casts their electoral votes in Hartford this year after the general election, to contact their state legislators and ask them to change our state’s rule. Maine and Nebraska already allow a split of Electoral votes among candidates through those state’s system of proportional allocation of votes.

I certainly do not want to give up our advantage in D.C., nor do I think this is a time to mess with the U.S. Constitution, which is what would truly be required to eliminate or change the Electoral College.
