Evening classes canceled at SHU

More than 1,500 without power in Fairfield

UPDATE, MONDAY, 7 P.M.: Evening classes at Sacred Heart University have been canceled due to a power outage after Monday afternoon’s storm.

According to a tweet from the university, it will take several hours to restore power.

As of 7 p.m., 1,573 homes and businesses in Fairfield are without power, according to United Illuminating. Another 600 customers in Bridgeport are without power

MONDAY, 5:51 P.M.: Storms that roared through the area around 5 p.m. Monday, July 18, have left more than 1,400 homes and businesses in Fairfield in the dark.

United Illuminating reported that 1,424 customers, nearly 6% of its service area in Fairfield, were without power as of 5:38 p.m.

Roads are closed and outages are reported throughout the area. Redding was hit particularly hard, with more than 1,400 Eversource customers without power around 5 p.m. That number was shortly cut to about 570. Major roads in Redding are also closed.

More people are without power in the northern central portion of the state, with a swath from Bristol east to Coventry bearing the brunt of outages.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch to be in effect until 8 p.m. this evening. The watch will include Fairfield, New Haven and Middlesex counties, as well as areas of Southeast New York and Northeast New Jersey.
