Southport Brewing taps support for Connecticut Challenge

The Southport Brewing Company is “pouring” for the Connecticut Challenge at its five locations (Stamford, Southport, Branford, Milford and Hamden) from July through September to help raise money for the Connecticut-based charity that supports and assists cancer survivors.

The handle of one tap at each of the restaurants has been replaced with the handset from a red emergency phone and is the designated “Help Line.” Each beer that is poured from that tap, usually the SBC seasonal brew, during the 3-month period results in a 50 cent donation to the Connecticut Challenge.

Barry Burns, a partner in the Southport Brewing Company, is very familiar with the Connecticut Challenge. He rode in its 100 mile bike ride last year and will be participating in the Connecticut Challenge Bike Ride again this year with his 14-year-old nephew from New Orleans who recently finished treatments for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. They will be riding at a distance to be determined by his nephew.

“We started the “Help Line” to give back to the communities that have patronized SBC for the past 15 years,” Burns said. “The partners collectively select a local charity on a quarterly basis. We are proud to support the Connecticut Challenge with the ‘Help Line’ this quarter. It is a Connecticut initiative with a global mission.”

The eighth annual Connecticut Challenge Bike Ride takes place on Saturday, July 28, starting in Westport. Anyone interested in riding, putting a team of riders together or volunteering may visit

“The Connecticut Challenge is proud to work with SBC and honored to be the beneficiary of their innovative ‘Help Line’ program,” says Bob Mazzone, COO of the Connecticut Challenge. “In addition to raising much needed funds for cancer survivorship programs in Connecticut, the ‘Help Line”‘ will increase public awareness of the issues cancer survivors face following the completion of their treatments.”
