Baseball: Fairfield Junior Legion blanks foe

The Fairfield Junior Legion baseball team made things difficult at the plate as well as in the field for the Easton-Redding Falcons when the Zone IV baseball rivals met in Fairfield.

The Falcons could muster just one hit. Defensively, they committed five errors in a 10-0 loss in a game shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Fairfield was held to just one run over the first three frames. That came in the top of the first on an RBI single by Tom O’Connell. Falcon starting pitcher Andy Tivadar then kept Fairfield in check for three innings.

In the top of the fourth, the locals tacked on another four runs. Jack Bigonette kicked things off with an RBI single. That was followed up by Liam Holroyd’s double, plating Kyle Miller and Bigonette. Fairfield added five more runs in the top of the fifth. A bases-loaded walk scored Aidan Klik for the inning’s first run. That was followed up by Jack Hogarth’s triple, scoring Miller, Holroyd and Bigonette.

Bigonette and Hogarth teamed up for four hits and seven RBIs.

O’Connell got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. He tossed four innings of shutout ball, striking out three, walking none and surrendering one hit, courtesy of Easton-Redding’s Jacob Lenes.

Tivadar pitched four innings for the Falcons, walking one, striking out two and allowing five runs.
