Alex Beyer and Friends perform Summer Soirée Benefit Concert 2 at Pequot Library

Fairfield resident and notable international pianist, Alex Beyer, returns to Pequot Library’s Concert Hall for his Summer Soirée Benefit Concert 2 on the tail of his most recent performance to almost 100 concert lovers. This summer’s series benefits music programs for all ages at Pequot Library year-round. On Wednesday, July 6, from 7:30-9 p.m. Alex Beyer will perform on piano with Stella Chen, on violin. They will perform works of Beethoven, Chausson, Messiaen, and Brahms. Tickets for students are $10 (21 and under) online and at the door; adult tickets are $25 in advance online at pequotlibrary.org or $30 at the door.

Alex Beyer has acquired an impressive array of prestigious concert appearances nationally and internationally. In 2016, he was the bronze medalist in the Queen Elisabeth Competition, and was named one of five finalists of the American Pianists Association Awards. In the last year, he has been a guest soloist with the Brussels Philharmonic, the National Orchestra of Belgium, the Royal Orchestra of Wallonia, the Harvard Radcliffe Orchestra, and the Irish National Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Milwaukee, Charlotte, Hartford, New Haven, Waterbury, and Bridgeport Symphony Orchestras, among others. Beyer received Sixth Prize at the 2015 US Chopin Competition. He was the recipient of Third Prize, as well as the Beethoven and Irish National Symphony Orchestra special awards at the 2015 Dublin International Piano Competition. Beyer was a 2012 US Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Alex Beyer has studied with Yoshie Akimoto, Dr. Matti Raekallio, and Melvin Chen. He is currently studying with Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun at the New England Conservatory, and studying mathematics at Harvard.

Stella Chen, twenty-three years old, is a recent graduate of the Harvard College/New England Conservatory Dual Degree Program studying with Donald Weilerstein and Miriam Fried. Chen graduated with honors from Harvard in 2015 with a degree in Psychology and as the first ever recipient of the Robert Levin Award. Her performance with the Welsh National Symphony Orchestra was chronicled by the Strad magazine as having a “warm sound” and “long musical lines”, and she was noted in the Wall Street Journal as a “rising star to watch.”

She has performed as a soloist on tour in Israel and Jordan with the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra to critical acclaim, and with the Orquesta de Medellin in Colombia. Other recent performances include Harvard’s Bach Society Orchestra, Mozart Society Orchestra, the London Chamber Orchestra, the Welsh National Symphony Orchestra, and members of St. Martin in the Fields. Stella Chen has served as the 2015-2016 Artist-In-Residence at Harvard University’s Lowell House, and is off to Juilliard to start her doctorate in the fall.

The final concert in this three-concert benefit series will be on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 7:30 p.m. with Alex Beyer performing on solo piano, tickets available at pequotlibrary.org.
