Christopher Allen Hankins, 24, was charged with second-degree robbery and third-degree larceny after a month long investigation by Fairfield Police detectives into the May 20 robbery of Webster Bank at 1177 Post Road in Fairfield..

Detective Bernie Kelley, the lead investigator, determined that Hankins visited the bank days before the robbery. While combing businesses in the area for video, Kelly identified the type of car Hankins used, along with a partial registration plate. Working with the state Department of Motor Vehicles IT Division, Kelley developed Hankins as a suspect.

Fairfield police searched Hankins’s home on Huntington Turnpike in Bridgeport on June 14, and said they found evidence that definitively linked Hankins to the bank robbery.

Police said that Hankins entered the bank around 9:30 a.m. May 20, and passed a note to the teller demanding money. The teller turned over cash, which contained a dye pack, and as the subject fled, it exploded just outside of the bank. No injuries were reported and no weapon was displayed.

Police said it was reported that Hankins robbed the bank to pay for his wedding, which took place several hours after the robbery.

He was held in lieu of a $25,000 bond.
