At least five houses have been washed from Fairfield Beach Road and lost.

They could be floating in Pine Creek or the Long Island Sound, First Selectman Michael Tetreau said during a press conference Tuesday.

Shortly before noon Tuesday, officials were still waiting for the next high tide, then that water to recede, before assessing the situation and damage in the beach area, swamped by Hurricane Sandy’s storm surge Monday night.

“There’s some significant damage we haven’t been down there to inspect,” Tetreau said. “Buildings are off their foundations, into the creek.”
