Junior Women’s Club announces annual spelling bee winners

On Monday May 23, thirty five participants competed for top honors at the annual town-wide Spelling Bee with Teddy Johnson of Roger Sherman School out spelling all other opponents. Continuing a three-decade tradition, the Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield once again hosted this event, held at Roger Ludlowe Middle School.

Classroom winners from Fairfield’s public schools fifth grade classes were challenged to spell words such as “momentum” and “gaiety” throughout the nine rounds it took for Teddy Johnson to emerge as the Winner of the Spelling Bee by spelling the word “concentric.” Other top finishers were Second Place winner, Adrian Tran of Stratfield School and Third Place winner, Eleanor Jacob of Burr School.

The top three winners received award medals and special prizes donated by the Fairfield JWC, Bankwell, People’s United Bank, and Saugatuck Sweets in Westport. All Bee participants also received JWC award certificates and goody bags.

This year’s Spelling Bee judges included Helene Murtha, head of Children’s Services, Fairfield Public Library; Andrea Canuel, assistant director Volunteer Program and Service Learning, Sacred Heart University and John Kovach, editorial director HAN Network, formerly Hersam Acorn Newspapers.

“The Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield was excited to once again host the Town Wide Spelling Bee, where our town’s fifth graders share the fruits of their hard work in class and at home,” said Tanya Annuncio, Bee co-chair. “Boy, can these students spell!”

In addition to the Spelling Bee, the JWC of Fairfield hosted its 7th “Touch-a-Truck” event in September, which raised funds for scholarships for Fairfield high school women, and “A Visit to Santa’s House” in December, the proceeds of which benefitted the club’s charitable partner, Alpha Community Services. The club also hosts community service projects and social events throughout the year.
