Fairfield Democrats unanimously nominate Cristin McCarthy Vahey for second term

Cristin McCarthy Vahey, joined by family, friends and fellow Democrats, was unanimously nominated by the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee to run for reelection as State Representative for the 133rd Assembly District.

Accepting the nomination, McCarthy Vahey thanked everyone for their support and spoke of the great honor of serving the people of Fairfield. The State Representative, a social worker, spoke of her passion for working with constituents, neighbors and friends, emphasizing the importance of reaching out and listening to people on all sides of an issue. “The privilege of representing Fairfield in the General Assembly has given me the opportunity to work with so many talented, passionate Fairfielders on issues that have a positive impact on the people of our town and state. I look forward to continuing my service to Fairfield and fighting for solutions that work for our families, our schools and our businesses.”

Former Selectman Sheila Marmion nominated McCarthy Vahey, citing her lifelong commitment to helping others, compassion, approachability, and deeply seated love for Fairfield. “She has served our community well as Selectman and a member of the Representative Town Meeting, where she was elected Deputy Moderator and Minority Leader. Cristin has volunteered with many community organizations, including leadership roles with the League of Women Voters, the Girl Scouts, PTA and her church community, and serves as co-chair of Fairfield Cares Community Coalition. Her knowledge, kindness, determination and skill have benefited Fairfielders greatly and will continue to benefit us when we reelect her November 8th.”

McCarthy Vahey’s nomination was seconded by Ellery Plotkin who reflected “We all know her as a dedicated public servant; we all know of her strong history of confronting and tackling tough jobs that others shy away from. We all know her effectiveness as an advocate in Hartford for issues that matter to our town. I have worked with Cristin for many years and it is both my honor and my pleasure to second her nomination.”

Cristin McCarthy Vahey serves on the State’s Education, Transportation and Appropriations Committees in Hartford. She was appointed to serve on the Commission for Economic Competitiveness and has helped forge legislation protecting children and seniors suffering from abuse and neglect, protecting student privacy and modes of assessment, and protecting consumers from variable electric rates. She was instrumental in saving the Town of Fairfield $3.5 million in school health insurance costs.

Educated at the University of Notre Dame (BA Economics and Government) and the University of Washington (MSW), Cristin McCarthy Vahey has been married for almost 22 years to her husband Brian, a US Navy veteran. They share the joy of raising three children, all attending Fairfield Public Schools.
