LETTER: Democrats accuse Republicans of ‘dodging responsibility’

Letter-to-the-EditorNEWTo the Editor:

On May 2, Democrat members of Fairfield’s Representative Town Meeting brought forward a motion to postpone a vote on the town budget. Why they did so was no secret, just as it was no secret as to why the Republicans opposed the motion. RTM Democrats sought to pass along in part or in full a likely  shortfall in state funding  to the taxpayers, RTM Republicans simply took action to ensure that would not happen.

RTM Republicans held (as did the majority of the Board of Finance) that passing  Governor Malloy’s funding reduction to taxpayers set a bad precedent, and members of the Republican caucus who spoke that night were crystal clear on this point, as was BOF Chairman Tom Flynn the week before.

The RTM voted unanimously to pass the town budget “as is” on the night of May 2. Since that time, Democrats like Hal Schwartz and Heather Dean have written letters crying foul and accusing Republicans of “dodging responsibility”, even though they know full well that’s not the case.

When you compare the tax dollars that Fairfield sends to Hartford to the state funding it gets back the difference is dramatic. As Chairman Flynn pointed out “no one can argue that the taxes which Fairfield pays are not enough”.  Evidently, that is to say “no one” except for certain members of the Democratic Town Committee.
