LETTER: What’ll it be for area legislators?

Letter-to-the-EditorNEWTo the Editor:

Our area’s Republican state legislators Tony Hwang, Laura Devlin, Brenda Kupchick and Gail Lavielle all endorsed John Kasich in our state presidential primary. As well as former U.S. Congressman Chris Shays, and former state senator John McKinney. They were all there supporting him at the Kasich Town Hall event held at Sacred Heart University.

They are, no doubt, now in a conflicted uncomfortable spot. Is it to be party loyalty or love of country? They’re faced with the terrifying fact that a plurality of GOP voters have foolishly made the preposterous decision to elect the dangerous crass reality TV star, Donald Trump, as their presumptive presidential nominee. And, by extension, that has also conjured up the horrifying thought that Trump could possibly be the next de-facto leader of the entire free world.

What I hope we don’t start hearing from them is the nonsense that we’re already hearing from other Republicans who are tap dancing around the Trump problem with this whiney, annoying, absolutely positively nuts catchphrase: “I support Trump but I don’t endorse him.”  (I can see the tee shirts, lawn signs, and bumper stickers being readied now.)  Who does anyone think they’re be kidding?  It’s a difference without a distinction. A pathetic joke! Anyone who thinks taking that spin absolves them of the guilt of putting thoughtless party loyalty over the good of our country, is delusional. Hopefully our area legislators are better than that.

Best case scenario would be that they have the good sense and courage to stand with the many Republicans nationwide who are so repulsed by Trump that they’re doing the honorable thing, putting love of our country above blind party loyalty, and placing themselves in the “Never Trump” camp.

Or they could simply stay silent on the issue.

It’s a dilemma. Never in the annals of modern politics have times been so frightening and trying for those of us who don’t suffer fools gladly.
