Pequot Library receives grants for school outreach initiatives

Since the Fall of 2014, Pequot Library has welcomed 1,192 students in grades K-12, and college, from 15 different schools in Fairfield and Bridgeport. These initiatives are made possible by a leadership grant from Fairfield County’s Community Foundation and generous support from Pequot Runners and Newman’s Own Foundation.

Pequot Library is home to more than 30,000 items in their Special Collections. Through tailored, educational, interdisciplinary field trips, the school outreach program shares rare books from the past with the students of Fairfield and beyond.

Students experience a tour of Pequot Library, including its history and architecture, led by a core group of skilled volunteers. The students then explore exhibitions featuring archival material from the Special Collections, and engage in a hands-on art project or interactive performance. These immersions synthesize what they have learned during their visit with what they are learning in the classroom.

To reach new audiences Pequot Library recently expanded the school outreach program to engage under-resourced students in arts and cultural experiences through multi-entry educational programming. Through these partnerships, students visited Pequot to explore scarce and unique materials regarding Shakespeare and Native Americans. Pequot Library will welcome students to their Pages from Pequot: The Birds and the Bees — Preserving Their Habitat exhibition this spring, after the new exhibition opens on June 4, 2016.
