Truck plows into Southport building

No one was injured when a truck towing a trailer plowed into a Southport building Monday afternoon.

Crews were sent to 281 Pequot Ave. at 4:52 p.m., and found the engine compartment of the truck sticking inside the building that contains offices, The Art Spirit Foundation gallery, and apartments.

A woman inside the building told firefighters she heard a loud crash and felt the building shake.

The driver was able to get himself out of the truck and waited for emergency crews to arrive. He said he was not hurt and refused medical attention, according to the Fairfield Fire Department.

The truck was still running when firefighters arrived. Firefighters called for building officials to assess the safety of the structure, worked to salvage valuables near the area that was struck, and had electrical service to the building turned off. Fire crews then stayed on the scene to ensure safety and address environmental hazards while two heavy-duty wreckers removed the trailer and truck.

Fire crews were on the scene until about 6:30 p.m.

Fairfield Police are investigating the accident.
