Girl who drowned in Lake Mohegan identified

A 10-year-old Bridgeport girl drowned in Lake Mohegan Tuesday evening, July 17.

Fairfield police Wednesday identified the victim as Catherine Trujillo of Iranistan Avenue.

Earlier information released erroneously identified her as Kathleen.

Police received a report of a child drowning at the lake on Morehouse Highway at 7:16 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers learned three adults and nine children were in the non-swimming area on the north end of the lake. Four members of the group had difficulty after entering an area where the water was over their heads.

Trujillo, who was swimming with her mother, went under and could not be found by the family.

Police and firefighters began to search an area that ranged in depth from four to 15 feet. Mutual aid was requested from both Bridgeport and Westport dive teams.

At 7:57 p.m. a Fairfield police diver found the girl in 10 to 15 feet of water.

She was rushed to shore, where medical personnel were waiting. She was treated at the scene and rushed to Bridgeport Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Detectives were continung the interview members of the girl’s family, and an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

Visitation will be held Sunday, July 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Funeraria Luz de Paz, 426 East Washington St., Bridgeport. Services will be private. Click here for her memorial page.
