LETTER: Elected leaders should put the interests of the communities first

Letter-to-the-EditorNEWTo the Editor:

My colleagues and I on the Representative Town Meeting are faced with the unenviable task of approving Fairfield’s budget without definitively knowing how much municipal and educational aid the Democratic majority in Hartford are proposing to cut from Fairfield amid budget perils at the State level.

Recently, I’ve read several op/ed pieces commending State Rep. Cristin McCarthy-Vahey for her efforts fighting to retain as much education funding from Hartford as possible. However, what is conveniently omitted from those pieces is that Ms. McCarthy-Vahey voted to cut $1.2M from Fairfield’s state education aid in her Appropriations Committee. There is no excuse, rebuttal or explanation for not standing up to her party in the interests of the community she represents.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Rep. McCarthy-Vahey capitulate to the will of Hartford Democrats and stray from the interests of her town. When the exorbitant budget that got us into this deficit was introduced, McCarthy-Vahey initially voted no before she flip-flopped and voted in favor of the budget revision that would eventually drive GE and residents out of Connecticut taxing them to their breaking point. Instead of exploring other possibilities and fighting for Fairfield’s education funding, Rep. McCarthy Vahey hastily voted to cut $1.2M from our school system. No matter how Democrats try to disguise it, the facts don’t lie.

Regardless of what’s recouped from the state, McCarthy-Vahey once again proved partisan politics would always take precedence to the welfare of our community. Check the minutes and transcripts and we will find McCarthy-Vahey never spoke up or fought for Fairfield’s education funding but deserted our town when we needed her most.

Our elected leaders should be charged with putting the interests of the communities first, not partisan politics and political aggrandizement.
