Center Street becomes one-way this week

Starting the week of July 16, Center Street in Southport will become one way from I-95/Jeliff Lane to the Post Road. The one way traffic will be in the northbound direction, taking advantage of the traffic signal on the Post Road. Traffic will no longer be allowed to access (south) on Center Street from the Post Road or from Kings Highway West. Vehicles that need to access the I-95 southbound entrance ramp or Center Street (south) can use Jeliff Lane at the Old Post Road.

The planning and work on Center Street will be implemented in two phases. Phase one, which begins the week of July 16, will establish the one way pattern. Barricades will be placed at the entrance of Center Street at the Post Road to remind drivers not to enter the street. The police department’s traffic enforcement unit will be on hand to assist both, commuters and pedestrians regarding the change. At least one week before the scheduled change, a message board will be placed in the neighborhood reminding residents and visitors of the impending change.

Phase two (which will begin fall 2012) will involve construction of curbs, sidewalks and the shoulder area.

Since 2006, the residents and neighbors of Center Street have had concerns regarding pedestrian and commuter traffic. Due to the increase in residential occupancy, commuter traffic and increased pedestrian traffic, the area became a concern to residents and town officials.

This segment of Center Street is unique due to its restrictive or narrow right of way, preventing the town from safely installing any sidewalks along that route.
