Fairfield University cancels classes Monday, Tuesday

Fairfield University has canceled all classes scheduled for Monday, Oct. 29, and Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Most, if not all University activities and events will also be cancelled. Questions about a particular activity or event should be directed to the sponsoring office or department, according to Fairfield.edu.

“We are making this decision now about classes on Monday and Tuesday so that students who want to go home can do so as soon as possible,” according to a statement. “Students who are unable to leave campus can remain in their residences.  The campus remains open, and essential services such as the Dining Hall will be open.”

As of 1 p.m. Saturday, Fairfield University offices will remain open and operating on normal schedules on Monday  and Tuesday.

Students will also be affected by mandatory evacuations of the Fairfield Beach area starting Sunday, Oct. 28, at noon.

“Utility companies and government officials have indicated that there could be widespread loss of power for an extended period of time,” according to the statement. “While the university has its own power plant, it is intended to work with the local power grid, and there is no guarantee that our power plant will be able to operate should the local power grid go down.”

University officials said they would provide updates through the school’s website, (www.fairfield.edu) as well as through e-mail, StagAlert messages, and on the University’s Facebook (www.facebook.com/FairfieldUniversity) and Twitter (@FairfieldU) accounts.
