Hwang, Shays to host town hall with Republican presidential hopeful

Republican Presidential candidate and Ohio Gov. John Kasich will visit Sacred Heart University in Fairfield Friday, April 8.

Doors open at 11;30 a.m., the event starts at noon. There is no charge for admission, but those who wish to attend are asked to register in advance at EventBrite.

The town hall will be hosted by State Sen. Tony Hwang and former U.S. Rep Chris Shays.

Hwang, a Republican, represents Connecticut’s 28th Senatorial District, which includes the towns of Easton, Fairfield, Newtown, Weston and Westport.

He is a ranking member on the Housing and Labor and Public Employees committees, and a member of the Commerce and Veterans’ Affairs committees.

The 50-year-old Fairfield resident and married father of two was born in Taiwan to parents that had escaped Communist China as teens and lived under martial law in Taiwan. Neither had attended college and both worked as blue collar laborers.

Shays represented Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District from 1987 through 2008, when he lost to current U.S. Rep. Jim Himes. He sought the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, but lost those bids.

Kasich, governor of Ohio since 2010, also ran for the Republican presidential nomination for the 2000 election. He served as a state senator in Ohio from 1979-83, when he was elected to represent Ohio’s 12th District in Congress, a post he held until the year 2000.

This year, Kasich remains in the race for the GOP nomination with Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz.

Connecticut’s Republican and Democratic Presidential primaries will both be held Tuesday, April 26. polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
