Operation Shred It! fundraiser April 3 at Congregation B’nai Israel

Congregation B’nai Israel, 2710 Park Avenue, Bridgeport will hold “Operation Shred It!” a document shredding and computer recycling fund-raiser Sunday, April 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., (rain or shine).

The event is open to the public and sponsored by Congregation B’nai Israel, the oldest and largest synagogue in the Fairfield, Trumbull, Easton, Stratford and Bridgeport areas. All net proceeds will benefit the synagogue. The actual shredding and computer electronics destruction will be performed on-site by Affordable Solutions, LLC, of Orange, a confidential document destruction firm.

“All people have to do to be part of Operation Shred It  is place unwanted documents in a box — paper clips, staples and all — and drive to the parking lot of Congregation B’nai Israel. Bring as many boxes as you can fit in your car, with no weight limits. Volunteers will be on hand to assist. “The event is an easy, fast and affordable way to safely destroy your private documents,” said Jim Greenberg, of Fairfield, a B’nai Israel member and event organizer.

The cost, payable in cash, is $10 for a small (the size of a plastic milk box) and $20 for larger boxes such as bank boxes. Hard drive destruction and computer recycling is available for a flat fee of $20 per item. B’nai Israel will also hold a bake sale at the event.

IRS guidelines say that in most cases people need to maintain income tax records for no more than seven years. For more information visit irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/How-long-should-I-keep-records.
