Epic rally pits National versus American

Fairfield National put together a come-from-behind victory only Little Leaguers could believe possible when manager Bill Llewellyn’s squad rallied from an 11-0 deficit to defeat Trumbull National, 17-13, in the loser’s bracket finals of the District II tournament at Blackham Field in Bridgeport on Friday night.

“This team does this… It doesn’t make it easy,” Llewellyn said after the Nationals earned a berth in Saturday’s 12 p.m. finals opposite unbeaten Fairfield American at Blackham.

“They just believe.”

Chris Radovic hit a solo home run for the Nationals in the bottom of the second inning, after Trumbull had scored three runs in the first and tacked on eight more in the top of the second.

Tyler Llewellyn smacked a bases-loaded double and Joey Mancini and Robbie Farruggio added RBIs to make it a more manageable 11-5.

Mancini came on as Fairfield’s fourth pitcher with only one out in the second and retired 9-of-10 batters (a walk) and struck out four in his 2.2 innings of work to give his team a chance to regroup.

Mancini opened the Fairfield fourth with a double to start a 15-batter, 12-run onslaught that closed with a three-run home run by Alex Steele.

The come back was driven forward by seven straight RBI-producing at bats from Matt Cerminaro, Steele, Griffin Donahue (two RBIs), Carter Kral, Reed Moscolo, Tyler Llewellyn and Mancini.

When the dust cleared, Fairfield led 17-11.

Trumbull drew two runs back in the fifth.

Fairfield National will need to defeat Fairfield American twice to advance to the Sectionals.

The if game is scheduled for 12 p.m. Sunday at Blackham.
