Girls basketball: Notre Dame loses to Cromwell in title game

The Cromwell Panthers completed a perfect girls basketball season and captured a Class M championship in the process by defeating the Notre Dame-Fairfield Lancers, 43-20, at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday.

One year ago, Cromwell lost a tight game to St. Joseph in the 2015 Class M title game. This year, the Panthers got a second chance and took advantage of it.

ND’s Taylor Ceballos and Dayniera Artis each picked up two quick fouls, which forced Lancers’ coach Eric DeMarco to sit them for the remainder of the first and all of the second quarter.

Cromwell (25-0)  took advantage of Notre Dame’s foul trouble by outscoring them 14-6 in the second to take a 21-11 halftime lead.

The 11th-seeded Lancers did not help themselves by shooting only 28 percent from the field and committing countless turnovers.

The Panthers were led by senior Emma Belcourt, who had 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

ENotre Dame, which finishes the season with an 18-7 record, was led by sophomore Gabby Joseph, who had eight points on 4-of-8 shooting.

Cromwell took leads of 7-5, 21-11 and 30-16 at the quarter breaks.

Cromwell’s Araya Lessard scored eight points.

Mya Villard and Theresa Quinn had five points each.

Notre Dame’s Taylor Ceballos had five points and five rebounds.

Zuquila Mbachiantim led the Lancers with eight boards.
