The downtown Fairfield University Bookstore, 1499 Post Road, Fairfield, 203-255-7756, welcomes back author and former Fairfield resident, Stephanie Kate Strohm on Saturday, April 16, at noon with a book launch for her new Young Adult novel, The Taming of the Drew, recommended for teens and up.

Cass McKay has been called stubborn, temperamental, difficult, and that word that rhymes with “witch” more times than she cares to count. But that’s all about to pay off. She has finally landed the role she was born to play—Kate, in The Taming of the Shrew—in the summer apprentice program of a renowned Shakespeare theater company in the forests of Vermont.

The-Taming-of-the-DrewBut Cass can barely lace up her corset before her troubles begin. Her leading man, Drew, is a complete troll, and he’s going to ruin Cass’s summer. Even worse, Cass’s bunkmate Amy has somehow fallen head over heels for Drew. Cass can’t let Amy throw herself at a total jerk, so she comes up with a genius plan to give Drew the personality makeover he so desperately needs: they’ll tame Drew just as Petruchio tames Kate! But as Shakespeare’s classic plays out offstage, Cass finds it harder and harder to resist falling for Drew herself.

“Befitting her character, Cass’s narrative voice has a flair for the dramatic, and the story is steeped in Shakespearean quotes and references. VERDICT: This is a breezy, if predictable, summer rom-com that will especially please burgeoning actors and theater aficionados.” —School Library Journal

“A Shakespeare tale that you won’t want Cliff Notes for! Shrewdly funny, smart, and romantic. The perfect vacation read!” —Jen Calonita, award-winning author of the My Secrets of My Hollywood Life series

Stephanie Kate Strohm is the author of Pilgrims Don’t Wear Pink and Confederates Don’t Wear Couture. She grew up on the Connecticut coast, where a steady diet of Little House on the Prairie turned her into a history nerd at an early age. She spent much of her childhood dressing up in bonnets. While attending Middlebury College in Vermont, she blossomed into a full-fledged Civil War buff and was voted Winter Carnival Queen. After graduating with a joint major in theater and history, she acted her way around the country, performing in more than 25 states, primarily in shows where she got to wear corsets.

Currently, Strohm lives in Chicago, where her closet is almost big enough to hold all of her shoes. When she’s not writing, she loves baking, shopping, cuddling her dog Lorelei, and dragging her boyfriend to chick flicks. Copies of The Taming of the Drew will be available for purchase/signing at the downtown Fairfield University Bookstore event. Visit us at and, Instagram & Twitter: @ FairfieldUBooks
