Cristin McCarthy Vahey, State Representative for Fairfield’s 133rd Assembly District, announced today that she will seek reelection this fall.

McCarthy Vahey, who serves on the State’s Education, Transportation and Appropriations committees, is seeking a second term.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal endorsed her run stating “I have known Cristin McCarthy Vahey for many years through her strong, ardent advocacy on behalf of the people of Fairfield. Her integrity, compassion, and ability to reach across the aisle allow her to ably represent the interests of her community. I emphatically endorse State Representative Cristin McCarthy Vahey for reelection.”

“I have the honor of serving Fairfield and our state thanks to the outpouring of support of my constituents, neighbors and friends here in Fairfield” said McCarthy Vahey. “This past year, after listening to and working with so many of you, I brought your concerns to Hartford and fought for job creation, economic opportunities, and investment in our neglected mass transit system to spur economic development for new businesses and increased job opportunities. I championed education legislation to address outdated modes of student assessment and to implement measures to detect and address services for students with dyslexia.”

Representative McCarthy Vahey added, “I am proud of the legislation we passed with regard to mandated reporting for child abuse and neglect; as well as expanding the definition of neglect when it comes to the treatment and care of senior citizens. We enacted legislation to protect Connecticut consumers from ‘variable electric rates’ contracts which lure citizens in with low introductory rates and then rapidly increase costs; among many other forward thinking citizen centered bills.”

Congressman Jim Himes gave his support to McCarthy Vahey, stating “Cristin McCarthy Vahey is a dedicated public servant with a strong history of rolling up her sleeves and tirelessly working to better people’s lives. Her background as a social worker and degree in economics give her a strong foundation for bringing forth solutions and innovations to help the people of Fairfield and our state. I have worked with Cristin over the years and it is both my honor and my pleasure to endorse Cristin’s reelection.”

McCarthy Vahey was appointed by House Speaker Brendan Sharkey to serve on the Commission on Economic Competitiveness. The nine member commission brings together stakeholders representing diverse sectors to promote economic growth, enhance Connecticut’s competitiveness, and analyze the state policy on business and industry.

On opening day of this year’s legislative session Rep. McCarthy Vahey said “I am committed to working in Hartford to promote policies that grow jobs and businesses, to show without reservation that Fairfield is open for business.” Underscoring that Fairfield is open for business she invited, as her two guests, Ken Kleban of Kleban Properties, which is working to acquire General Electric’s Fairfield headquarters, and Beverly Balaz, President of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce.

Cristin McCarthy Vahey’s achievements in her first year also include a 100% rating by the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters for key support of legislation protecting the environment and recognition by the Police Chiefs Association for her efforts to enhance law enforcement. In addition, McCarthy Vahey helped secure a STEAP (Small Town Economic Assistance Program) grant for Fairfield’s historic Burr Mansion and introduced bills promoting public health and safety.

McCarthy Vahey is participating in Connecticut’s Citizens’ Election Program; a “voluntary program which provides full public financing to qualified candidates for statewide offices and the General Assembly.” She is the first candidate in the state to reach the threshold for qualification.
