Marine Art Gallery sails to Greenfield Hill

After 15 years in downtown Fairfield, the J. Russell Jinishian Gallery has moved to 1899 Bronson Road in the Greenfield Hill, two miles from the former location.

The gallery specializes in fine marine and sporting art.

The former Fairfield County Bank building has been transformed the former into an art gallery housing more than 1,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures, ship models and scrimshaw.

“In this great new space, visitors can view more artists’ works than ever before,” Jinishian said in a press release. “I invite you to come and enjoy some of the greatest marine artists of our time. In fact, there’s nowhere else in the country where you can see the latest work of the world’s leading artists together in one place.”

More than 100 artists are represented, including Christopher Blossom, Donald Demers, A.D. Blake, Joseph McGurl, Tim Thompson, Arthur Shilstone, Mark Susinno and John Stobart.

The J. Russell Jinishian Gallery offers changing exhibitions and opportunities to meet the artists through lecture programs.

In addition to the artists represented, artwork is also taken on consignment for resale. The gallery can also arrange commissioned works of art.

Jinishian, who has worked with top marine artists for 30 years, is the former director of the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport Museum. He is the founder and publisher of Marine Art News, the nation’s only publication dedicated to contemporary marine art and its artists, since 2001. He is also the author of Bound for Blue Water, a guide to contemporary marine art, and has served as a juror for many exhibitions including the prestigious Art for the National Parks Exhibition.

A lecturer on marine art, Jinishian is available for lectures or traveling exhibitions.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by appointment. An open house is planned for Saturday, Sept. 22, starting at noon.
