Wrestling: Fairfield teams advance 10 at State Open

Fairfield Warde, Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Prep and Notre Dame of Fairfield each has wrestlers competing for titles when the State Open resumes in New Haven on Saturday.

Warde’s 11th-seeded Alex Steele will meet fifth-seeded Rodric Grant from Portland in the 126-pound quarterfinals. Steele won by fall in 4:00 and a 6-3 decision to advance.

On the other side of the bracket, Ludlowe’s top-seeded 126-pound Austin Sherman will wrestle seventh-seeded Aaron Occhpitti from Newtown. Sherman won a 5-2 decision in his first bout.

At 132 pounds, Tim Kane from Warde is the top seed and will wrestle eighth-seeded Ryan Luth from Foran of Milford. Kane advanced with a pin in 2:34 of Prep’s Orlando Sanchez.

At 138 pounds, Warde’s Jack Price is seeded 20th and will wrestle in the consolation round. He won his first match 3-0 then lost 2-0. He pinned in 3:54 in his first wrestleback.

At 106 pounds, Warde’s Noah Zuckerman is still alive.  Seeded 11th, he won his first bout 4-0 before losing by fall. In his first wrestleback, Zuckerman won by 4:46 fall.

At 145 pounds, Warde’s Charlie Kane is seeded first and will wrestle No. 8 Mike Angers from Tolland High in the quarterfinals. Kane won his first match by pin in 2:18. Ludlowe’s Bobby Clark gained the quarters when the No. 5 seed won his first bout by fall in 1:00. He’ll wrestle No. 4 seed Cullen Contos from Windham.

At 152 pounds, sixth-seeded Marcus Sherrod will wrestle third-seeded Samuel Lindblom from Waterford in the quarters. Sherrod won his first match 10-4.

At 160 pounds, Ludlowe’s fifth-seeded Chase Lind will meet No. 20 Zach Zeyher from Wilton, who knocked off Class LL champion Joey Ryan from Trumbull in hirst match. Lind advanced with a 13-2 major decision.

At 170 pounds, Fairfield Prep’s ninth-seeded Evan Titus pinned in 2:00 in his first match to earn a spot in the quarterfinals opposite top-seeded Max ODell from South Windsor.

At 195 pounds, Ludlowe’s Lee Stenild-Johansen won his first bout 4-3, Seeded fifth, he’ll meet Danbury’s fourth-seeded Anthony Marquis in the quarterfinals.

At 220 pounds, seventh-seeded Jon Ocano will wrestle Middletown’s 13th-seeded Tre’Quan Weston in the consolation round.

Notre Dame heavyweight Hakim Fleming, the second seed, will wrestle Ludlowe’s seventh-seeded Billy Stapleton in the quarterfinals. Each wrestler advanced with 3-2 decisions.
