Baseball: Prep’s Mascolo, Stone, Lopez choose colleges

Fairfield Prep has announced that seniors Chase Mascolo, Grant Stone and JR Lopez have earned the opportunity to compete in the sport of baseball while achieving their college degrees.

Chase Mascolo – Wake Forest University

Mascolo played as infielder and relief pitcher for the Jesuits since his sophomore year, and was a starting shortstop during his junior year. The varsity baseball team has compiled a record of 38-10 in is two years on the team; the win total is the program’s most wins in a two-year period since the 1984-85 seasons. Mascolo is a cum laude honor student, member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society, a peer tutor, and is taking all honors

and AP classes his senior year. A Fairfield native, he volunteers his time at Operation Hope in Fairfield, which helps the homeless and hungry, and the Community Kitchen.

Grant Stone – Harvard University

A summa cum laude honor student for all of his Prep years and a standout pitcher in the Prep baseball program, Stone will begin his college academic and baseball careers at Harvard University in the fall of 2016. The 6-6 right-hander has been a varsity baseball player since his sophomore year, where he has pitched in both starting and relieving roles. During the 2015 season Grant, along with his brother Kevin ’15, formed one of the toughest 1-2 pitching tandems in the state of Connecticut. Stone earned All SCC Quinnipiac recognition in junior year. He has served the Prep community as a leader in and out of the classroom and was selected as an SCC Scholar Leader in his junior year. He has earned recognition as a member of the National Honor Society and serves as a peer tutor. Stone was recognized with the Harvard College Book Award at this year’s academic awards mass. He has led both the Freshman Retreat and Kairos Retreat and enjoys his involvement in Prep’s Fantasy Sports Club and supports Prep’s Bellarmine Review literary magazine. He reaches out to the wider community through volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club of Stamford and by his involvement in Prep’s White Ribbon Campaign. He is a resident of Stamford.

JR Lopez – Union College

Juan, known as JR, is passionate about baseball. A sweet swinging left-handed hitter with line-drive power, Lopez has been a starting outfielder for the Jesuits since his sophomore year. JR is a Cum Laude honor student. He is also involved with the community and enjoys working with children. He has volunteered his time at the Fairfield YMCA, St. James School in Stratford, and the Cardinal Shehan Center in Bridgeport helping to mentor elementary school children after school. In the Prep community, JR has been a leader on both the Freshman Retreat as well as the Kairos Retreat. He is a resident of Stratford.
