Art/Place Gallery show explores ways to interpret flowers

The public is invited to a reception at Art/Place Gallery for Floradora, the paintings of Susanne Andover Keany and Mollie Keller on Sunday, March 6, from 2 to 5 p.m. Their work will explore the myriad ways to represent and interpret flowers. The artists will talk on Thursday, March 24, from noon to 1:30. The show runs from Feb. 25 through March 27, at the Art/Place Gallery, 70 Sanford Street in Fairfield.

Susanne Andover Keany lives and works in Weston. She usually paints large scale paintings in series based on themes from nature, but for this show she says she has “created an intimate look at flowers, those agents of romance and commemoration and simple joy. The oil paintings in this exhibition celebrate the color, structure and meaning of flowers.” Keany has exhibited widely in Connecticut, New York, and Florida. She is a graduate of Barnard College and the School of Visual Arts at Purchase. Her work is in both private and corporate collections. More of her work may be seen on the Art/Place website at artplacegallery.org.

Mollie Keller, who lives and works in Trumbull, is contributing paintings in several media. She says her drawings, watercolors, and oils demonstrate her “evolution from botanical precision to painterly descriptions and on to expressionist portraits of tulips, roses, and flowering trees.” The work in this show also showcases her growing interest in looser and larger gestures as frameworks for her painting. More of her work may be seen at www.mollieKELLER.com. Keller has been painting throughout her life. Her formal art training began at Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, where she studied watercolor, printmaking and bookbinding. She has exhibited in a variety of galleries and other art venues in Connecticut.
