A Fairfield man died in a one-car accident Tuesday afternoon on Unquowa Road near Fairfield Ludlowe High School.

Peter Rainone, 69, of Winnepoge Road, was found unconscious and unresponsive when police arrived at the overturned Jeep, reported at 12:21 p.m.

An off-duty Yonkers fire fighter who said he lived nearby, assisting in stabilizing the patient awaiting the arrival of the Fire Department, according to the Fairfield Fire Department.

Fairfield Fire Engine 1, Ladder 1 and Car 3 responded, along with American Medical Response.

Emergency personnel immediately started CPR and attempted advanced life support at the scene. Rainone was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the emergency room doctor. The family was notified and transported to the hospital by police.

According to police, the preliminary investigation revealed that a single vehicle, Jeep Wrangler, driven by Rainone, was traveling east on Unquowa Road when it drifted across the center line. It continued to travel off the shoulder of the road where it struck a tree. The vehicle rolled onto its side and came to its final resting position.

The case remains under investigation.

At 12:21 p.m. the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a report of a Jeep rollover in front of Fairfield Ludlowe High School on Unquowa Road.

Fairfield Fire Engine 1, Ladder 1 and Car 3 responded along with Fairfield Police and American Medical Response; Police Captain Donald Smith was first on scene reporting that the vehicle was on its side with one unresponsive occupant in the vehicle along with a good samaritan, an off-duty Yonkers firefighter who said he lived nearby, assisting in stabilizing the patient awaiting the arrival of the Fire Department.

Engine 1 and Ladder 1 arrived on the scene at 12:25 and immediately began extrication of the patient, a 69-year old male, taking over patient care from the good samaritan and assisting AMR transfer the patient to the ambulance for transport to St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Engine 1 was last unit clear at 1:26 p.m. after the vehicle was righted and removed by flatbed, leaving the incident scene under investigation by the Fairfield Police Department Accident Investigation Unit.
