So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, One Book One Town selection

The Fairfield Public Library — along with its community partners — Pequot Library, Fairfield University, Fairfield University Bookstore and Fairfield Museum and History Center are proud to present So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson as the official selection for One Book One Town 2016.  This is the ninth year that Fairfield has embraced “One Book One Town” and we know that this book will inspire a community-wide conversation.

So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed is a fascinating in-depth look at a phenomenon that is occurring virtually on a daily basis:  a single sentence or photo on Twitter or Facebook launches an international diatribe and witch hunt in a matter of minutes.  What is it about social media that has turned an unsettling number of us into self-righteous and judgmental human beings?  Are the wonderful advances in technology taking us back to the days of scarlet letters and the stockade?  Journalist Jon Ronson goes in search of the answer to these questions and his journey to find them is one you will not soon forget.  Simultaneously powerful and hilarious in the way only Jon Ronson can be So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed is a deeply honest book about modern life, full of eye-opening truths about the escalating war on human flaws-and the very scary part we all play in it. This is an important, timely and enlightening book.

Mr. Ronson’s books include – So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, The Psychopath Test, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Lost at Sea, and Them – are all international and New York Times bestsellers. He co-wrote the screenplay for Frank, starring Michael Fassbender. He writes for The Guardian, has appeared on This American Life, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and his many TV documentaries include Stanley Kubrick’s Boxes and The Secret Rulers of the World. The movie adaptation of The Psychopath Test is currently in development starring Scarlett Johannson.
