Bruton, Golger draw raves

Davie Bruton and Chris Golger from Fairfield Prep  were two of 14 student-athletes from seven high schools named The SportsCenter of Connecticut/Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for September.
Now in its seventh year, The SportsCenter of Connecticut/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program will honor outstanding young men and women each month during the 2012-13 academic year.
Davie Bruton
The co-captain of the soccer team, Bruton has excelled in the classroom with a 4.1 grade point average.
A member of the National Honor Society, he is a peer tutor and is a Governor’s Scholar Award nominee.
Bruton also earned the U.S. Army Reserve Scholar Athlete award.
On the field, he is a four-year letterwinner and earned SCC All-Quinnipiac Division honors a year ago.
Prep soccer coach Ryan Lyddy said: “Davie expects only the best of himself in the classroom and on the field of play.
“He is a tireless worker, who leads by example, inspiring his teammates with his effort and achievements.”
Chris Golger
A co-captain of the football team, Golger has been a top-notch performer in the classroom. He holds an impressive 3.65 grade point average and is a member of the National and Spanish honor societies.
A peer tutor, Chris is a member of the Business Club. On the field, he has been a two-year varsity starter.
Prep football coach Tom Shea said: “Chris is an outstanding citizen, who has accomplished much in the classroom and in his activities.
“He is a tireless worker who gives 100 percent on every play and is the heart and soul of the team.”
Student athletes who are selected must be a varsity letterwinner and have a 3.0/B average while demonstrating leadership qualities.
“Many thanks to the Sports Center of Connecticut for its support of the SCC and the Scholar Athlete of the Month program,” SCC Commissioner Al Carbone said.
“This conference has been proud of its success for the last 18-plus years, and to be able to recognize outstanding young men and women who demonstrate the desire and ability to succeed solidifies what the SCC is all about.”
Sports Center of CT/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month recipients and receive a certificate, commemorative tee-shirt and a SportsCenter of Connecticut activity pass.
Founded in 1994, the Southern Connecticut Conference is in its 19th season of competition in 2012-13 with 22 member-schools and nearly 23,000 students.
SCC member schools have captured 349 state championships since the league’s inception.
More importantly, the SCC is recognized for its outstanding non-athletic programs and events, which attempt to break down barriers and build bridges of understanding to its students.
