Couple from Bridgeport killed in Miami crash

Wife was professor at Fairfield University, husband a director at HCC

Two local colleges are in mourning after a crash over the holidays in Florida took the lives of two educators who were married to each other.

Jose Labrador, 52, and his wife, 40-year-old Gisela Gil-Egui, were both killed in a five-car crash in Miami, Florida, on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Killed in the same car were Miguel Gil of Cooper City, Fla., and 71-year-old Gisela Margarita Egui of Venezuela.

The Florida Highway Patrol told media in Miami that 23-year-old Alexandra Nalani Lefler was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-95 when she sideswiped one car, then slammed head-on into the sedan carrying the local residents, just after 12:30 a.m. last Wednesday. Lefler also died in the crash.

The crash involved five vehicles.

Gil-Egui was a professor of mass media at Fairfield University. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Universidad Central de Venezuela, and her master’s and doctorate at Temple University.

Labrador was acting director of Education Technology at Housatonic Community College, where he had been on the staff since 2007 He was currently responsible for HCC’s online education and the primary source of support for the program. He was an alumnus of the Art Institute of Philadelphia with a bachelor of science degree and was currently working on a master’s degree.
