Pequot Library offers Masters of American Theatre: Puritans to Pizzazz

The second set of classes in Pequot Library’s American Master Artists Series is focused on theatre. Why not give a holiday gift of culture to yourself or others this year? The five-week seminar starts on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m., and the weekly two-hour class runs through Feb. 11, 2016. This is a community-based series of enriching and engaging illustrated slide talks surveying the history, controversies, and appreciation of American theatre.

Masters of American Theatre: Puritans to Pizzazz will be taught by Dr. Martha Schmoyer LoMonaco, who is Professor of Theatre, Resident Theatre Director, and Co-Producer of Theatre Fairfield at Fairfield University. Through lectures with live and recorded performance clips, participants will tour the history of the American stage from the Puritans to the Pizzazz of Broadway and they will examine the development of a new American Drama through the distinctive voices of: Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, Suzan Lori-Parks, and Tony Kushner. P.T. Barnum and the advent of American Popular Entertainments such as: Vaudeville, Minstrelsy, Burlesque, and Circus will be featured.

The seminar will also explore the development of American Musical Theatre from its 19th century beginnings through Rodgers, Hammerstein, and Sondheim and the class will discover how 42nd Street became the crossroads of the world. Dr. Martha Schmoyer LoMonaco teaches courses in American social and performance history as it relates to American Drama, Popular Entertainments, and Art in America. LoMonaco is the inaugural curator for a new performance series, titled “It’s A Women’s World,” in the Wien Black Box theatre at the Quick Center for the Arts in Fall 2015. She is an active theatre historian, director, writer, and lecturer.
