Aspetuck Land Trust purchases open space near Southport Beach

Thanks to community donations of all sizes, Aspetuck Land Trust has purchased a nearly one acre building lot at 1400 Pequot Avenue, directly across from Southport Beach in Fairfield that was threatened by residential development, according to David Brant, executive director of the land trust.

“At this time of the year it is especially appropriate for Aspetuck Land Trust to thank the public for the tremendous support it enjoys from the community,” said Brant.

“Because of that support, we were able to purchase and preserve as open space forever a .72 acre lot alongside Sasco Creek across from the long popular public swimming beach and picnic area. The acquisition prevented a house from being built on highly erodible land. Potential development also would have had a negative impact on the distinct character and beauty of the area and put the water quality of Sasco Creek at risk,” said Brant.

He said the Aspetuck Land Trust purchased the property September 25 for $105,000 with support from the Southport Conservancy and local residents.

“We are also now in the process of purchasing additional open space in Weston and exploring farm property acquisition and preservation in Easton too. All of this open space preservation is possible because of the generous gifts we receive from the public. We are very grateful but will need additional support to meet our goal of keeping Westport, Fairfield, Easton and Weston greener communities,” said Brant.

“To become a member or buy a membership as a gift, we ask the public to visit our website at and click Donate to make a donation or download a gift form,” said Brant.

Thousands of adults and children annually enjoy visiting the 45 trailed nature preserves in the area owned or managed by Aspetuck Land Trust.
