Supports Fairfield Station/Tomlinson Middle School project

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor:

Fairfield County is non-compliant with the Clean Air Act. Non-compliance results in increased asthma rates, pulmonary disease and other health problems related to pollution caused by fossil fuel emissions.

On June 29, 2004, the Fairfield Representative Town Meeting, with an overwhelming, bi-partisan vote, passed Fairfield’s 20% by 2010  Sense of the Body Resolution.

The resolution called for the encouragement of “community action in support of putting Connecticut’s customers on a path to having 20% of their energy supply come from clean, renewable energy sources by 2010…”

The town met the goals set in the resolution and continues, as called for in the resolution to encourage “ the town administration to undertake further energy efficiency and conservation measures beyond the 20% by 2010 goals.”  These measures are ongoing and now have an annual energy cost savings of over $2.4 million. Every clean energy initiative contributes to a cleaner, healthier Fairfield for our families and for our environment.

The latest clean energy project, scheduled to be voted upon by the Board of Selectmen this week, is the Fairfield Station/Tomlinson Middle School project which will supply 90% of the school’s electricity with solar panels mounted on carports located on the New York-bound side of the train station and occupy approximately 33% of the parking area. There will be no cost to the town. The benefits will be in addition to those that have been and are yet to be attained. A big win for Fairfield residents! This will be another step towards a healthier town, a cleaner environment and help to control taxes.
