LETTER: In support of solar carports

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor:

I’m writing in support of the proposed one-megawatt solar carport installation at the downtown Fairfield train station.

The project is a no-brainer: as a power-purchase agreement, it won’t cost the town anything upfront, but it will save local citizens $1.8 million in energy costs, and even more from additional lease revenues, for a total of more than $2 million over the lifetime of the project. Tomlinson School, located next to the project, will see 90% of its energy needs met. Our town selectmen, who wield a deciding vote, campaigned on a platform of financial prudence, will have to see the value of such a project.

The only possible objection to the solar carports is from local residents who would rather not look at them, but it’s hard to see why a standard railroad station parking lot is much of a visual improvement.
