LETTER: Support the Fairfield Commuter Lot Solar Project

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor:

At the Board of Selectmen meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 4:30 p.m., in Sullivan Independence Hall, the Board of Selectmen will consider the merits of a proposed solar power project at the Fairfield train station.

There are very strong environmental and financial reasons to support this project. A solar power vendor will construct what amounts to solar carports at no up-front cost to the town, and provide 90% of the electricity to Tomlinson Middle School in the form of clean solar energy. The town purchases this power back from the vendor at a price that will save the town $70-100,000 per year.

If you use the commuter lot, there are everyday benefits as well. The capacity of the lot will be unchanged after the project is completed. The solar carports that will cover most parking spots will protect your car from rain and snow, and shade it in the hot summer months.

I encourage all citizens to support this project, either by speaking at the Board of Selectmen meeting, or writing directly to them at [email protected] Fairfield is a clean energy leader in Connecticut, and this project will symbolize that leadership.
