Connecticut Symphonic Winds gives free holiday concert

The Connecticut Symphonic Winds invites families and children to their annual free, festive Holiday Concert on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 1 p.m., at the Roger Ludlowe Middle School, 689 Unquowa Road in Fairfield.

Geared to children and parents of all ages, the one hour concert without intermisssion will include standard favorites like Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride and Christmas Festival, as well as TV and movie gems like The Nightmare Before Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Winds will introduce a new arrangement of The Night Before Christmas and there will be plenty of traditional works throughout.

Charles DePaul, Music Director and Conductor says, “We hope people will take a break from the ‘Shop ‘til you Drop’ mode to stop – and sit down to enjoy this non-stop musical extravaganza which will help them really get into the holiday spirit!”

The CT Symphonic Winds will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary in 2016.

Founded in Stratford, CT in l987, the ensemble has performed in Stratford-Upon-Avon in England and Stratford, Ontario as well as in Austria, Germany and Lichtenstein, prior to three more recent concerts in New York at Carnegie Hall. Earlier this year, the CT Symphonic Winds was given the honorary title of “The Concert Wind Ensemble of Fairfield” by First Selectman Michael Tetreau. Last month they received  a grant from the Fairfield Rotary Club to purchase new digital equipment for their visual projections which transform some of their performance pieces into multi-media presentations.

Known for its varied repertoire – from classical to contemporary – the ensemble is composed of 75 talented musicians, many of whom are professionals who say, “I don’t play for free anywhere else but here (with the CT Winds) because it’s worth it!” The ensemble also includes many music educators. All members are accepted through auditions and ages range from a few high school students to musicians in their seventies. The members rehearse weekly and all share a passion for making music.
