Genealogy 1-on-1 appointments available at Pequot Library

Genealogy 1-on-1 appointments are now available at Pequot Library, Fridays, from 10-4. Individuals seeking to research their family tree receive customized help on their ancestry search from a knowledgeable researcher. Sessions are free, open to the public, and by appointment only. To schedule an appointment contact genealogy consultant, Robyn Swan Filippone, MLS at [email protected] or call the Front Desk at Pequot Library, 203-259-0346, ext. 15.

The Genealogy 1-on-1 sessions offer assistance specific to an individual’s own research. Filippone said, “If someone is just beginning, I can give them the proper forms for keeping track of the family, their correspondence, sources they will use, etc. I also explain how to keep family trees organized, whether online, on paper, or both. Someone more experienced might have a particular problem they are trying to solve. I help by pointing them in new directions or to new sources.” Each session is one hour long, with the possibility of scheduling more appointments if more time is needed.

To research a family tree, if the person is a beginner, they should bring items such as birth, marriage, divorce and death records if they are available. School records, places lived, and what the family member did for a living are helpful. If the genealogy-seeker is more experienced, he or she can bring materials they have that are specific to the question trying to be solved.

Filippone holds a bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of Vermont and a Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from Southern Connecticut State University. She is the secretary of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut and is a longtime resident of Fairfield, being descended from Fairfield Founders Andrew Ward and Thomas Staples.

Filippone has been actively working on her own genealogy research for 20 years. She completed a course in Genealogy led by William Stansfield, former teacher and principal at Tomlinson Middle School, who is now one of Pequot Library’s monthly, Genealogy Roundtable, leaders. When Filippone joined Pequot Library in 2005, she worked with the late Rod MacKenzie, who was highly regarded as knowing more about Fairfield genealogy than anyone else.

After his passing, she continued the monthly Genealogy Roundtables that MacKenzie led. The Genealogy Roundtables, held on the second Saturday of every month, average 15 people per meeting, and are popular, both in the community and with people from further afield. At the Roundtables, Filippone, and genealogists, William Stansfield and Betty Oderwald, help people get started in genealogy research and answer questions. Visit pequotlibrary.org for Genealogy Roundtable dates. To schedule customized Genealogy 1-on-1 appointments at Pequot Library, email [email protected] or call 203-259-0346, ext. 15.
