Bigelow Center activities: Weeks of Nov. 23 and 30

The Bigelow Center for Senior Activities hosts upcoming programs for the weeks of Nov. 23 and Nov. 30.

The Bigelow Center is closed on Thursday, Nov. 26, Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 28 in celebration of Thanksgiving.

Hearing Clinic — Tuesday, November 24 at 10 a.m., provided by Parker ENT, appointments required.

Memory Workshop — Monday, Nov. 30, 10:30 a.m., Melody Matheny Orpen, of Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Fairfield County, will review the nature of memory, how the brain works, and offers an overview of disorders that can affect the brain. Learn the signs and symptoms of memory loss, ways to strengthen memory, and how to discuss memory issues with their physician. Registration required.

Confidential Memory Screening: Monday, Nov. 30, 11:30. Strictly confidential memory screening, conducted by appointment by Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Fairfield County, following the Memory Workshop. The free screening takes about 10 minutes and consists of simple questions that serve to assess basic memory and other cognitive functioning. Anyone whose screening raises concerns will be referred to their primary care provider for further assessment. Brain Games Lunch and Learn — Tuesday, Dec. 1, noon. Try your luck at a variety of brain teasers and enjoy a delicious and complimentary lunch. Join in for an enjoyable, heart healthy lunch and try your luck at a variety of brain teasers. Facilitated by Danielle Anacona of The Greens. Lunch provided by The Greens at Cannondale and Wilton Meadows. Registration required.

Burr Christmas Tree Festival — Friday, Dec. 4. Bus leaves the Center at 10:15 a.m., returns at noon. Each year hundreds of dedicated volunteers magically transform Fairfield’s historic Burr Homestead into a celebration of the Christmas season. Enjoy a cup of complimentary hot cider and roam the mansion to view the rooms designed by local interior decorators and artists. Fee: $5 admission paid directly to the festival. Registration required.

Senior Issues Forum: Dr. Cathy Brodows of Southport Chiropractic — Thursday, Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. One effect of chronic stress is prolonged muscle tension and contraction which creates uneven pressures on the bony structures of the body, often leading to misalignment of the spinal column. Registration required.

New Exercise Classes:

Qigong — Fridays at 1:00 p.m. Learn the basics of Qigong. Class includes standing & walking forms, guided meditations, active self-massage and healing sounds. Tea & discussion follow each class. Instructor: Julie Moffat.

Weight Training Class — Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. Certified Instructor, Diane Tatnall. This class will help with building muscle, muscular conditioning, toning, flexibility and balancing. No fee for this class.

Saturday Exercise Classes — 9 a.m., Zumba Gold Class. Zumba Gold is a modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves you love, at a lower intensity. Fee: $5 per class payable to instructor, Diane Tatnall offers. Registration required. 10 a.m., Weight Training Class, described above. Fee: $5 per class payable to instructor. Registration required.
