Bigelow Center sponsors memory talk

On Monday, Nov. 30, at 10:30 a.m. Nurse Melody Matheny Orpen of Visiting Nurse and Hospice in Norwalk will present a free Memory Talk and confidential memory screenings, at the Bigelow Center, 100 Mona Terrace, Fairfield. Advance registration for the talk is required. Call 203-256-3166.

The memory screenings will take place at the Bigelow Center, however, to register in advance and protect confidentiality, call 203-762-8958 in advance for an appointment following the talk. The free screening takes about 10 minutes and consists of simple questions that serve to assess basic memory and other cognitive functioning. Anyone whose screen­ing raises concerns will be referred to their primary care provider for further assessment.

Nurse Orpen will review the nature of memory, how the brain works, and offer an overview of disorders that can affect the brain. Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of memory loss, ways to strengthen memory, and how to discuss memory issues with their physician.

The Bigelow Center is accessible to people using assistive devices. Transportation is available to Fairfield residents by calling 203-256-3168 a few days in advance. Lunch is served at noon Monday through Friday for a donation of $3. Lunches must be reserved three business days in advance by calling 203-256-3118 between the hours of 9:30-10:30 a.m. Weekend days do not count as business days.
