Fairfield Social Services seeks help for families during holidays

Fairfield Social Services is reaching out to the community to help families in need during the holiday season. Last year there were 130 Fairfield families helped during the December holidays thanks to the generosity of individuals, businesses, faith-based and community organizations. Fairfield Social Services works together with other local organizations to ensure that local families in need are supported during the holidays.

Director of Human and Social Services Terry Giegengack said, “The Social Services Department has an annual tradition of providing gifts for families in need. Last year the Family Holiday Program provided the option to donate gift certificates in lieu of wrapped presents. Clients use the gift cards for food, gas, clothing, gifts and activities at the holiday time and during the year. Any denomination is most welcome.”

Donors are asked to call 203-256-3170 or come in to the Bigelow Center for Senior Activities at 100 Mona Terrace, where the Social Services office is located. The reasons for this request include security; since the cards are like cash and we ask for the receipts also in the event that someone’s card doesn’t work for any reason. The social workers ask the donors about their wishes, for example, do they want to donate toward toys, food, gas or activities. This way the donor can choose what they wish to give and may be matched up confidentially with a recipient family by the social workers.

On behalf of the families that receive the holiday gifts, the Town of Fairfield Department of Human and Social Services would like to thank the community for keeping all our residents in mind for the upcoming holiday season. If anyone is interested in donating or receiving holiday help, contact Allison Barker-Ford, Licensed Social Worker for the Department of Human and Social Services, at 203-256-3170 or by email at [email protected] for additional information.

The Bigelow Center for Senior Activities is accessible. Anyone wishing an appointment with a social worker should call 203- 256-3170, Monday through Friday, from 9-3:30.
